So to review, we have seen two predominant themes thus far in Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” – first, the primacy of mind and second, the fact that we can all create a success consciousness. These two factors comprise his “secret” that reappears throughout this work hundreds of times. The whole point of the book is to demonstrate how to achieve a success consciousness as opposed to a failure consciousness. So how do we become success conscious?

After interviewing over 500 successful, wealthy people, Hill’s answer to this question lies in the application of his thirteen principles or steps to riches.

These 13 steps are desire, faith, autosuggestion, specialized knowledge, imagination, organized planning, decision, persistence, the power of the master mind, the mystery of s*x transmutation, the subconscious mind, the brain, and the sixth sense. In this post we shall explore the first step: DESIRE.

And not only desire, Hill exclaims, but red hot flaming desire with a specific purpose.

Here’s where achievement starts! Remember in Chapter 1 the story of Edwin Barnes who thought his way into a partnership with Thomas Edison because of his burning desire to achieve this. It had nothing to do with wishes or hope.

There was no Plan B for him. He had to win or perish!

Wishing or hoping will not gain riches.

As was mentioned, only a hot flaming desire with a definite, specific purpose in mind and the faith that it will happen can accomplish this.

Furthermore, there are 6 specific steps for transmuting your desire for riches into wealth. These are:

1) Fix in your mind the definite amount you want.

2) Determine exactly what you intend to give in return, since there is no such thing as “something for nothing”.

3) Set a certain date at which time you will have accumulated your wealth.

4) Create a definite plan.

5) Write out a clear concise statement.

6) Repeat this statement out loud twice a day.

It is essential to do all of these six steps, but the sixth one is the most important.

For as you read your statement, you must feel, see and believe yourself already in possession of the riches you desire.

Let me mention here that this step reflects the key psychological insight of later experts that the unconscious has no sense of time. It cannot distinguish between the future and the present. So to speak, see and feel your desire as already present convinces the unconscious that this is so and, thus, facilitates the desired result.

It is obvious, then, that the accumulation of wealth can not be left to fortune or good luck.

As Hill says: “If you do not see great riches in your imagination, you will never see any in your bank account.” In other words, having an open mind is essential for belief.

Neither faith nor courage is inspired by a closed mind. Remember, he says, no more effort is required to aim for abundance and prosperity in life than is required to accept misery and poverty.

The discussion so far can be summed up by the following formula:

Desire + Purpose + Faith = Wealth

There follows toward the end of this chapter the remarkable story of Hill’s own son Blair, who was born deformed without ears. All the doctors told him Blair was going to be a deaf mute all his life. Hill would have no part of this.

He had a burning desire and the belief that his son would defy nature and be able to hear someday. Hill’s belief was so strong that it was transferred to his son who, in turn, had total belief in his father.

They worked together for many years developing Blair’s hearing and speech until it was normal! In turn, Blair became a millionaire in his own right by marketing a new hearing system to deaf people the world over.

Thus he helped save hundreds of people from the fate of becoming deaf mutes! In Hill’s own words: “It is my duty and a privilege to say I believe, and not without reason, that nothing is impossible to the person who backs desire with enduring faith.”
